Sir Mokshagundam Visveshwaraiah
Mokshagundam Visveswaraiah, popularly and affectionately known as Sir M.V., was born on August 28, 1860 in a village known as Muddenahalli in Chikballapur Taluk, Kolar District.
His father died in Kurnool when Visveshwaraiah was just 15 years old,he completed his lower secondary schooling in Chikballapur.After schooling he joined Central College in Bangalore for his graduation,he lead a very simple life, he learned his lessons under the street light, also a strict vegetarian and a teetotaller. He would go to sleep by 10 P.M. and wake up at 6 A.M. His diet included a very light breakfast, two slices of bread or chappatis,vegetables without spices, rasam, curds, Nanjangud bannanas for lunch. He was known for his honesty and integrity. Before accepting the position of Dewan of Mysore, he invited all his relatives for dinner.

Sir M.V's Achivements in life time
1891: Established Deccan Club at Pune.
1899:
Designed a New System of Automatic Waste Weir Flood Gate.
1901:
Introduced the Block System of Irrigation.
1909:
Prepared a Scheme for Flood Protection work and underground drainage for Hyderabad City.
1913:
Started State Bank of Mysore.
1914:
Started Mechanical Engineering School at Bangalore.
1916:
Established Mysore University and the State Engineering College in Bangalore.
1918:
Approved the plan to establish Bhadravathi Iron and Steel Works and a Number of other Industries.
1927:
Designed and constructed Krishnarajasagar Reservoir.
Public libraries were established in Bangalore and Mysore.
1936:
Automobile industry plan was prepared.
1937 to 1938:
Mahanadi flood control work in Orissa. br>
1941:
Establishment of All India Manufacture's Organisation, and was President (1941-1954)
1942:
Started Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic at Bangalore.
1952:
Selected the proper site for a new Railway bridge to river Ganga in Bihar.
Director in the Tata Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Bombay (1927-55)
Travelled extensively in Europe, Canada, UK and visited U.S.A. five times and Japan twice with a view to gain knowledge and experience for developing our country.
Honours and laurels conferred on Sir M.V.,
1904 Honorary Membership of London Institution of Civil Engineers for an unbroken period of 50 years. 1906 "Kaisar-i-Hind" in recognition of his services. 1911 C.I.E. (Companion of the Indian Empire) at the Delhi Darbar.
1915 K.C.I.E. (Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire).
1921 D.Sc. - Calcutta University.
1931 LLD - Bombay University.
1937 D.Litt - Benaras Hindu University.
1943 Elected as an Honorary Life Member of the Institution of Engineers (India).
1944 D.Sc. - Allahabad University.
1948 Doctorate - LLD., Mysore University .
1953 D.Litt - Andhra University.
1953 Awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Town Planners, India.
1955 Conferred ' BHARATHA RATNA'(The gem of India), the highest dinstiction of the country.
1958 'Durga Prasad Khaitan Memorial Gold Medal' by the Royal Asiatic Society Council of Bengal.
1959 Fellowship of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
